When the gold rush ignited in the Fraser Canyon, thousands of people arrived from around the world by steamer, mule, some by foot almost overnight.
While most people didn't hit their personal El Dorado, thousands decided to stay and start new lives here.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, right, and B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell sing happy during B.C.'s 150th Anniversary Celebration in Victoria, Monday August 4, 2008.
VICTORIA -- In between bites of a huge strawberry-covered birthday cake, Prime Minister Stephen Harper participated in celebrations marking British Columbia's 150th anniversary by calling the province a shining light that is helping guide the future of Canada.
Harper was in B.C. for a two-day trip that also included staged photo-ops and barbecues with local supporters, but the prime minister wasn't in the mood to answer questions from reporters about a controversial apology he made during a stop in Surrey, B.C.
Harper apologized Sunday for the 1914 Komagata Maru incident, in which hundreds of Indians seeking a better life in Canada were turned away and, upon returning to Calcutta, many on the ship were killed or jailed.
In Victoria, thousands of people were gathered on the front lawn of the B.C. legislature on a glorious summer day to participate in the province's 150th anniversary celebrations, which included free performances by musicians, Alex Cuba, Colin James, Burton Cummings, Sarah McLachlan and Feist.
Unphased by the disruption, Harper said British Columbia is leading the way on many fronts and is certain the province's next 150 years will be even more productive and fruitful.
B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell said British Columbia is a diverse province that blossomed from its early gold rush frontier days to a modern, free-thinking jurisdiction that cherishes its aboriginal peoples, its pioneering history and its willingness to explore new experiences.

150th Anniversary of British Columbia (2008) In 2008, British Columbia celebrated the 150th anniversary of its designation as a crown colony (strictly speaking, it marks the anniversary of the mainland portion of the province gaining such status).
At the same time, Victoria celebrated the 165th anniversary of its establishment.
On August 4, 2008, the main birthday party took place on the grounds of the legislature in Victoria, with approximately 40,000 people in attendance, along with Premier Gordon Campbell, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and others.
Afterwards, Sarah McLachlan, Burton Cummings, Colin James, and Feist performed for the crowd at a free concert. |
